| Run #31 continued... I decided to load my pics to my .mac homepage. So you'll have to go there to see the pics (shameless plug). I'm going to come up a recap of my experience but for now let's just say - although I was sore for only 3 days afterwards, I have had no desire to run even one step since the Marathon. | | |
| Run #27 Ran interval workout on with Club Run With Us for 4 miles with 2 mile cooldown. One member said to the coach, "Hey, he didn't warm up yet?" and the coach said, "it's okay, they're going to jog the first half mile". I was wondering, why this person is such a stickler for details like that. I guess you have to be that way when you're a disciplined around 3 hour marathon runner. And that's probably why I'm not in that category. Total = 6 miles
Run #28 This was my longest run. I got to the Rosebowl a little late so everyone started running almost right after I jumped out of the car. So I couldn't find my buddy and I asked this other guy what the difference between those who were going north and south. He said the north running ppl were doing their own thing. So I went south with those who were doing 12 miles. This was a tough run because it went downhill first to San Marino and then back uphill along the Arroyo. Plus I forgot to bring my GU. I couldn't keep up with the group I started with and I had to stop at Trader Joes to buy some juice to give me energy. It was really tough getting back to the Rosebowl. I think part of it was the previous workout 2 days ago was tough and I was still recovering. Then I took a big swig of my Accelerade when I got back to my car and got an instant boost. So I finished another lap around the Rosebowl. Total = 16 mi.
Run #28 Ran 6 miles around the Rosebowl at a pretty fast clip with two marathon runners and my buddy. My buddy and I were tired from the previous 16 miler so it felt fast to us.
Run #29 Ran 3 miles on a treadmill. Was too busy with work and other commitments so I took over a week off. Total = 3 mi.
Run #30 Ran at Huntington beach when I went to pick up my race bib. My legs felt kinda dead. The waves were big. The health expo wasn't that great.
Run #31 The PACIFIC SHORELINE MARATHON! Leaving at 4:30am with my wife and biking buddy. Don't know how much I'll run of this race but I'm determined to finish! Total = ?????
| Run #23 Got sick for two weeks after that 12mi. Apparently your immune system is really low after a big effort. Went for a 12 mi mountain bike ride in Angeles Crest. Jeff tried to kill me. First we went left at the fork in the road. 2 uphill miles later it turned out we should have turned right. So I was thinking, too bad, we'll have to do it next time. But we went back to the fork and went right. Up the windiest rock infested slippery trail made for mountian goats. Goats like Jeff. Part of the trail was burnt by forest fire. It was a pretty fun and challenging ride down the singletrack. My quads were super cramping at the end and I had to walk a section. I was yelling for him to wait up for me but he was around the bend. Fortunately, he had stopped because he was cramping up too. So the next run I think was 6 mi around the Rosebowl with Lawton. Left ITB was really tight. Total = 6 mi.
Run #24 Tried running on the treadmill at the gym while watching NFL playoffs. Only made it 3 miles because my ITB tightened up. Total = 3 mi.
Run #25 Ran around the Rosebowl with Lawton, Kimberly, and Will on bike. ITB felt good after days off with stretching and massage. Total = 6mi
Run #26 Finally woke up early on Sat. morning to run with the Pasadena Pacers and Lawton at 7am. It was freezing and windy. I kept my jacket with hood on the whole time. Ran from the Aquatic Center to Descanso Gardens which is uphill the whole way. The run back was faster but my knees were hurting at the last mile. Next Sat is scheduled for 16 mi. but this week makes me think I'll be able to do it with a few breaks. Since 6mi of this Run is uphill, I think I'll be able to go more distance on the flats (like the actual race course) Total= 12 mi

| Run #17 Okay really losing track now. Ok, I think this run was a 8 miler around the Rosebowl. I was really trying to crank out 9 but my knees just wouldn't do it. It is getting really cold at the Rosebowl. Total - 8.1 mi.
Run #18 Ran an easy 3 miles around the Rosebowl even though my left ACL or something was really tight. My coach said he felt the same thing. So I didn't feel like running but it actually loosened up at the end so I guess it was good to get some circulation going. Total = 3 miles
Run #19 Had a deep tissue massage the day before. It was the most painful massage I've ever had because my calves were sooo tight. It's good to have a stranger massage you because if it's someone you know, you'll resent them for hurting you so badly. But...I had a great run! We did interval training around the Rosebowl which was 2 minutes fast 3 minutes slow. We finished in about 30min. After a few rounds these two guys started getting way in front of the pack. So I decided I should push myself and try to stay with them. I could tell I was straining a little bit because my stride was getting too long but the competitor in me wanted to stay with them so I did. The next couple of days, my achilles was killing me. So I should save the racing for the race next time. Total=6 mi.
Run #20 Went to Run at the Rosebowl again near dusk. I started off toward JPL and immediately my achilles was hurting. I was hoping it would loosen up but it hurt the WHOLE run. I had my wife drop me off and told her I'd run to Starbucks on Fair Oaks to meet up with her. I figured that way I could get some extra miles in without having to run around in a circle. So I was hurting but I made it to the Starbucks on Fair Oaks and California. Then, I looked everywhere but didn't see her so I called her cell but there was only voicemail. So then I think, oh great, she must have thought that I meant Starbucks on Fair Oaks in S. Pasadena. I figured okay, I didn't feel like running anymore but this will force me to put in another 1.5 mi. so that's a good thing. So then I run over there and she's not there either. Now I'm a little mad because I feel abandoned and I have no idea where she is. Finally I call her phone and she leaves a message on her greeting to tell me that she was at the Starbucks on Fair Oaks and Orange Grove! That Starbucks didn't even enter my mind because I've only been there like twice and the Fair Oaks and California one is the best/most frequent location for us. So the lesson according to her is for me to communicate more clearly. Ai-ya! I know all you husbands out there feel my pain. Total=9 mi.
Run #21 Achilles was sore so I took 4 days off to heal. Returned to the Rosebowl just in time for hill workouts. This time I did 6 while the others did 8 and I was really dying. One day, after I lose 20 lbs. I'm going to beat those other guys and girls. I used to rule hills back in HS. Especially the ones around my house. Grrrrrr. Total=4 mi.
Run #22 So my coach told me I should be running at least 13 mi for my long runs. So I enlisted my buddy to ride his bike alongside me because I was heading to some trails where we mountainbike and lately there's been too many news reports of ppl getting stranded. It turns out there were a lot of ppl on the trail. But, it was nice to have company and someone to carry my water. On the way up, a kid on a bike with thick glasses almost ran me over. I stepped out of the way just in time to turn around and watch this kid smash into my buddy's handlebar and arm. Baam, my buddy was like a wall so the kid fell onto the ground after the bikes made a thud sound. Don't worry, the kid was okay. He just got his breath knocked out. He actually tried to get on his bike after 15 seconds but his dad made him take a break. It was really cold up on the trails and my knee started hurting around the halfway mark. On the way back, my buddy cramped up because it was so cold. So he took a break while I kept going but he made sure to catch me on the way back. The last two laps I was practically crawling. I have a feeling that's how the end of my marathon's going to be. Total = 12 mi.
| | Currently Watching Chariots of Fire By Nicholas Farrell, Nigel Havers, Ian Charleson, Ben Cross, Daniel Gerroll, Ian Holm, John Gielgud, Lindsay Anderson, Nigel Davenport, Cheryl Campbell, Alice Krige, Dennis Christopher, Brad Davis, Patrick Magee, Peter Egan, Struan Rodger, David Yelland, Yves Beneyton, Jeremy Sinden, Gordon Hammersley see related | Run #15 Uh-oh. Starting to lose track. That can be a good thing or a bad thing I guess. Took a break for Thanksgiving even though other ppl probably ran a short race on that morning. Then the break extended until Sat. It's funny how procrastination is impervious to procrastinating. So Saturday I dragged myself out to run in the afternoon. It was perfect weather for running. I resorted to the same route I took last time execpt I modified it so that I wouldn't have to run around the track. I actually got an errand done too by stopping by the supermarket to get a roll of quarters for the laundry machines. For some reason, whenever I start my run, my shins start cramping up. Total = 7mi.
Run#16 I knew it would happen and it did. I missed two runs because I got sick. I feel so guilty. I guess it's expected when you are training around the wintertime. I forgot it could get so cold in SoCal. Ran two laps around the Rosebowl. I was pretty stiff the first lap and I was really thristy because I barely drank water today. I need to prepare better on practice days. Second lap I picked up the pace a little bit even though my calves were super stiff. I had to rely a lot more on my quads and quick turnover to make up for the lack of toe-off. I decided that my lungs have been way ahead of my legs and that I should give my lungs a little workout so Miles 4 and 5 I took off. I actually hit the "zone" and was getting the runner's high. It's been a real long time since I felt that so I couldn't help but smile and thank the Heavenly Father as my headphones pumped out "Majesty". I was reminded of Eric Liddell's line from "Chariots of Fire". I believe God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast. And when I run I feel His pleasure. How I wish I used that as my senior yearbook quote... Total = 6mi.
